Private AI for the practice of law

Serious legal AI that never leaves your building.

Proprietary Legal Intelligence designs, builds, and tunes private, on-premises AI for law firms — custom frontier-model workflows, document automation, and retrieval over your own work product — so your clients' files are read by machines you own, in a room you control, and nowhere else.

PLI

“Your proprietary work product is your proprietary intelligence. The durable advantage isn’t a bigger model — it’s the way a firm uses one, kept inside its own walls.”

One firm, two arms

Consulting for firms. Open research for the profession.

PLI Consulting

Private AI built inside your walls: custom frontier-model workflows, on-premises hardware and model selection, document-automation pipelines that produce court-ready output, and retrieval systems over your own work product. Designed around how litigation actually runs — intake to filing — not around a software demo.

PLI Labs

Our open arm. PLI Labs publishes open-weights, expert-pruned model checkpoints optimized for legal work — leaner versions of strong open models with the parts legal work never uses removed — alongside open-source tools for legal document processing and evaluation. Free to download, inspect, and run on your own machines.

The flagship engagement

The proprietary value is the manner of using a frontier model.

The strongest legal AI in 2026 is not a secret model — it is a frontier model wrapped in one firm’s craft: custom skills, registered workflows, agent orchestration, retrieval over its own filings, evaluation, and guardrails. PLI builds that layer for your firm, and it is yours to keep.

Custom skills & workflows

Your recurring tasks decomposed into narrow, checkable steps a model runs the same way every time — not a chat window and a prayer.

Agent orchestration

Multiple AI agents dispatched with bounded scope and a single reviewer, so work parallelizes without any one model grading its own homework.

Retrieval & guardrails

Drafts grounded in your own approved language, checked against the record, with verification gates that fail loudly instead of guessing.

From an operating practice

Numbers with their real context.

These figures come from the founder’s own launch talk, describing his own practice. They are illustrative of what a well-built private system did in one firm — not a promise of results for yours.

30–40%

The share of repeatable work the founder reports assisting with AI — drafting, tracing, summarizing — with a lawyer reviewing every output.

500 → 250 GB

What expert-pruning a mixture-of-experts model can do — cutting capacity legal work never uses so it fits owned hardware.

$0
client files sent to the cloud

On-premises by design: inference runs on hardware the firm owns. Nothing is uploaded, retained, or used to train someone else’s product.

Why on-premises

Confidentiality is not a feature request.

The files stay home

A lawyer’s duty of confidentiality does not bend to a vendor’s terms of service. With an on-premises system, client documents are processed on hardware your firm owns. Nothing is uploaded, retained, or used to train someone else’s product.

You own the machine

No per-seat metering, no surprise price changes, no model that quietly changes behavior overnight. Your firm controls which model runs, when it updates, and what it costs after day one: electricity.

Built from real practice

Every workflow PLI designs started as a problem in an active litigation practice — drafting, discovery review, financial tracing, exhibit preparation — refined under real deadlines before it became something we would put in your firm.

The operating proof

We run what we recommend.

PLI’s founder is a South Carolina family-court litigator with more than eleven years in practice. Over the past several years he designed and built a complete local-AI stack for his own firm: a multi-GPU, on-premises inference fleet; a document-automation system that produces deterministic, court-ready filings; retrieval across decades of his own work product; and pipelines for selecting, pruning, and evaluating the models that run on it.

That stack is not a prototype. It drafts, summarizes, traces, and checks real cases under real deadlines. PLI exists because other firms kept asking how it was done — and because the answer should not be “hand your client files to a cloud vendor and hope.”

Research & methodology

PLI publishes its methodology and its open-source model research in plain language for lawyers and in full depth for engineers. Start here.

The method PLI teaches

How a firm turns a frontier model into a reliable associate: skills, workflows, retrieval, evaluation, and fail-closed guardrails.

Why on-prem isn’t paranoia

What “the data never leaves the building” actually requires, and why owning the stack is now the affordable option.

Legal REAPs, not finetunes

Why PLI Labs prunes open models around legal capability instead of training on client data — and what that protects.

Common questions

Straight answers.

What does Proprietary Legal Intelligence do?

PLI is a legal-AI consultancy with two arms. PLI Consulting designs and builds private, on-premises AI systems for law firms — custom frontier-LLM workflows, document-automation pipelines, and retrieval over the firm’s own work product — so client data never leaves the building. PLI Labs publishes open-weights, expert-pruned legal models and open-source tools anyone can inspect and run. It is founded and operated by a practicing South Carolina family-court litigator who runs the same stack on live cases every day.

How is this different from Harvey, CoCounsel, or other legal-AI products?

Those are cloud software: they require sending client data to a vendor’s servers. PLI builds AI that runs on hardware the firm owns, on premises, so confidentiality is satisfied by architecture rather than by a promise. PLI also sells the method of using a frontier model — custom skills, workflows, and agent orchestration your firm keeps — not a subscription to a walled product. And it is built by a litigator, not a vendor who has never signed a pleading.

Do we have to buy special hardware?

Not necessarily. PLI sizes the system to your caseload and budget, and a large part of the open research is about serving strong models on accessible, even older, GPUs. Some firms start with a single well-chosen machine. The assessment tells you honestly what your work actually requires — including when a smaller setup, or none at all, is the right call.

Is PLI a law firm? Is any of this legal advice?

No. Proprietary Legal Intelligence is a technology consultancy, not a law firm, and it does not provide legal services. Nothing on this site is legal advice, and contacting PLI creates no attorney-client relationship.
